Nulled WordPress Plugins and Themes Aren’t Necessarily Illegal

Let’s start with the elephant in the room…

It’s unlikely that the FBI kicks down your door if you use nulled WordPress plugins or themes. That’s because, in contrast to the other content that people usually “pirate” (e.g. music, movies), nulled WordPress plugins and themes are often not breaking the law.

The reason here has to do with the GPL (General Public License). Without making this a lesson on copyright, you just need to know that part of what the GPL license allows for is that anyone can freely distribute GPL-licensed software (yes – even premium GPL-licensed software).

So if a nulled plugin site puts a piece of GPL-licensed software up for download, they’re not technically breaking the law because they have the right to freely distribute that GPL code.

The GPL is a big part of WordPress, and most (but not necessarily all) WordPress themes and plugins use GPL. This is, in part, because themes and plugins must be GPL-compliant in order to be listed in the WordPress.org directory.

While premium plugins aren’t required to have a GPL license, many also have a freemium version on the WordPress repository, which then does a require GPL license. Or they choose to have a GPL license. Many premium plugins such as WP Rocket and Gravity Forms are GPL-licensed.

There are other reasons, as well – like being able to use existing GPL-licensed code in plugins and themes. Typically, if you use existing GPL-licensed code in a product, you must release subsequent products under the GPL (this is the reason for the dustup between WordPress and Wix back in 2017).

The GPL is complicated and we’ve overly simplified some of the principles to condense the core ideas into a few paragraphs. But basically – most of the nulled WordPress plugins and themes that you see are probably not doing anything illegal. In fact, GPL is one reason why WordPress is great.

But that doesn’t mean you should go out and pack your site full of nulled extensions…

When you use a nulled extension, you’re opening yourself up to this type of exploit because, unless you have the knowledge and time to dig through all the code, you have no idea what else is lurking for you in the nulled extension.

That’s because a big part of what you’re paying for with GPL-licensed software is support from the developer.

When you pay for a product, you get the option to reach out directly to the developer if you encounter any issues with the product.

On the other hand, with a nulled extension, you get zero support. Hit a snag? Hopefully Google helps! Because that’s pretty much your only option. If the plugin your using has a free version in the WordPress repository, you might be able to get a response there. But let’s be honest, it’s pretty much like playing the lottery. If you waste three hours fixing an issue that the developer could’ve fixed for you in five minutes, did you really “save money” in the end? Probably not (if you value your time).

You Won’t Get Any Automatic Updates

In order to enable automatic updates for a premium plugin or theme, you’re going to need a license key.

Without a valid license key, you’re going to have to manually update extensions every time there’s a new update.

There are two big problems with this:

First off, it’s just plain annoying and time-consuming. You go from having to simply click a button, to having to delete and re-upload a plugin every single time.

That’s not the biggest issue, though.

More importantly, you’ll no longer get that red update notification in your WordPress dashboard. That means you’ll have to find another way to keep track of when new updates come out.

What if the developer releases an urgent security fix, but you don’t get the memo until a few weeks later? Out-of-date extensions are a big attack vector for WordPress sites, so you’re leaving your site open to unnecessary risk if you’re not able to promptly apply new updates.

It’s true that some GPL clubs go and grab the latest versions and then they’ll release the update on their site. But who do you want to put your trust in? A GPL club with a thousand different plugins, or the developer of the plugin. Is that risk worth saving a few bucks?

From the 11 plugins, I tested 4 of which are potential Slider Revolution alternatives: Smart Slider, Metaslider, Master slider, and Gutenslider.

I plan to choose a Rev slider template, which I’ll try to recreate with each plugin. It won’t be easy, because a free plugin can’t fully replace a paid plugin, but let’s try it! I chose this News slider template. There are thumbnails on the left, and there is a white box with a heading, a description, and with a button.

Smart Slider

Smart Slider is a powerful and perfect free Slider Revolution alternative. This is one of the most popular slider plugins in the WordPress repository, has a 5-star rating and 800,000+ active installs. With this plugin, you can create sliders and blocks without coding knowledge.

The drag-and-drop editor helps you create the slider as you have imagined, and the available layers can be freely used. The heading, text, images, buttons, YouTube, and Vimeo layers help you create a slider that you can structure in rows and columns. You can easily create a responsive slider, and every layer is customizable.

With Smart Slider I could almost fully recreate the same looking slider as the Rev slider template, only one feature is missing: the layer animation. Layer animations are available only in the Pro version.

MetaSlider

With 600,000+ active installs, Meta Slider is one of the most popular slider plugins for WordPress. But is it the best free slider plugin?

Don’t get me wrong, Meta Slider is a great plugin if all you want to do is create a simple image slideshow. The user interface is minimal and easy to understand and use. Creating a slideshow is a straightforward process – just upload your images, add captions, and then you can set the dimensions and transition effect.

Unfortunately, layers are pro features, so you’ll need to upgrade if you want to create more than just simple image slideshows with this free Slider Revolution alternative.

Master slider

This well-designed slider plugin, Master slider provides an easy-to-use interface for creating simple sliders. Quickly get started with one of eight free slider templates or build your own custom slider from scratch using this Revolution Slider alternative.

While in Slider Revolution you can put layers on your slider to the position where you want, Smart Slider offers 2 options for positioning: a default and an absolute position. The Absolute position is similar to what Slider Revolution offers: you can drop your layers everywhere on the canvas.

In addition, the Default positioning works like a page builder: you can put your layers in rows and columns, and align them vertically or horizontally. To make space between the layers, you can use padding and margins. Why is it good? Because of that, you can create a responsive slider with minimal effort, and it will look great on every device. Also, you have the option to combine these 2 modes by which you can achieve every design as you imagined.

Slider Revolution has more options where you can animate your slider or your layers. You can put animation on your layers, on your background, you can use Ken Burns or parallax effect, so there are many options. However, in the free version of Smart Slider, you can use only background animations. Layer animations and a lot of other effects are available only in the Smart Slider Pro.

Speed

I have created a Smart Slider free demo with Slider Revolution to test the speed of each plugin. I published both sliders into a new empty page.

I didn’t use any optimization settings, which can speed up the results – so the speed test was made with the basic settings of each plugin. As we can see from the results, we can say that Smart Slider is faster, which isn’t bad for a free plugin, right?

Smart Slider can be a great free Slider Revolution alternative because you can create more kinds of sliders with this plugin. Let’s see some examples of what kind of sliders you can create with Smart Slider as with Slider Revolution.

If you want to create a hero image block for your site, Smart Slider can be a great free Slider Revolution alternative. With Smart Slider, you can put Heading, text, image, and button on your slide, and you can position it where you want.

After purchasing Slider Revolution go ahead and log into your member dashboard at: https://account.sliderrevolution.com/

Once logged in, the first thing you’ll want to do is download a copy of your plugin. To do that, click the purple Download button on the right end of the Slider Revolution bar:

You’ll be prompted to download a zip file that contains the Slider Revolution plugin. Go ahead and save that zip file somewhere easy to find on your computer.

Go back to your member dashboard one last time, click the refresh icon corresponding to the key you just used, and you should see your site’s domain appear along with a blue check-mark:

You can use each key on one live site, and one localhost environment for staging purposes.
